Kumano I Ke Ala was featured recently on episode 4 of ‘Taste Our Love for Hawai’i: Kalo Journey’ , premiering this Thursday, April 6th at 9:30pm on KHON2!
Five talented chefs from across the country were invited on a once-in-a-lifetime exploration of kalo — learning about kalo’s important connection to community, culture and ‘āina and reimagining this everyday food source for creative culinary uses. Guided by Earl Kawa‘a, Chefs Bonny Davis, Ben Ford, Michael Ginor, Dean James Max and Jason Peel spent time with kalo farmers on O’ahu & Kaua’i—working in the lo‘i and learning how to clean, cook and prepare kalo the traditional way—to inspire their own innovative kalo dishes.
Chef Michael Ginor who is one of the chefs featured in the film passed away last year just a few weeks after HFWF22. This film is dedicated to him, and the Festival has created a scholarship fund in his name to honor his legacy—providing a Hawai‘i culinary students or professionals with the opportunity to extern at Hudson Valley Foie Gras or Restaurant LOLA.
